Spam Control Measures

This server takes various steps to avoid spam, both directly to the lists and to try to avoid email harvesting. Measures are also taken to try to reduce other forms of abuse. These measures include but are not limited to:

  1. By default, list membership information is not generally available. This may be enabled on a list-by-list basis. Note that if it is enabled, each user can opt out by configuring his account options.
  2. By default, only list members are permitted to post to the mailing lists. On some lists, posting by others is permitted after it is approved by the list maintainer.
  3. By default, the lists use a multistep subscription process, whereby the user must confirm his subscription. This is done to keep abusers from subscribing victims to list that the latter aren't interested in. Only after you confirm your subscription will you be sent email from that list.
  4. This server makes use of the various real time blackhole lists, as well as other MTA-level anti-spam measures. If your email to this server gets rejected with a message about a policy rejection on your address, you are probably using an ISP that has been blackholed. Your options are either to get your ISP to clean up their act, or to find a different ISP. If you are affected by this, the rejection email should contain URLs where you can find more information.
  5. All access to the web interface is required to be over SSL. This is to keep user passwords from travelling in cleartext.
  6. Names and addresses are never given or sold to other sites. The maintainer of this site detests UCE/UBE (spam) and will not knowingly contribute to its propagation.
